Calyx Point Data server VS. Brandon Computer Geek Server

Ok all, I will try to due my best to help you.

Point Data Server AKA PDS is a product that Calyx Point sales that is an add-on to Point starting with Version 5.0. PDS is not a separate product that allows you to take applications. What it does allow you to do is warehouse data and write applications to interface with the data because it is SQL based. In order to use PDS You will need the current version of point. You can do administration for Point Data Server by logging in to PDS web page but you cannot take a application (1003) VIA the PDS web interface. Each pc/net branch that will connect to your PDS server will need to have the current version of Point installed on each PC and under the point admin you will need to select the PDS check box at the bottom. Next to the check box you will need to point the website or IP address of your Calyx server running point. Selecting the check box tells point to connect to that IP Address or web site for the location of the files that can be edited. The Problem is that the applications can be saved to any local location on any hard drive that connects to the Point Data Server. What this means is that any person that has access to the file can save the file to the local hard drive on the remote pc and take the file. One good thing about PDS is that all the local resources are used on the remote computer. Local resources would be Antivirus software and Spyware software as well as sending a Email out of point. You will also need to set up an SSL (https) certificate on your server and configure your domain name or IP address to point to the server that you would like to use as your Point Data Server. If you are using windows 2003 selfcert is a very good solution to the SSL. You can use 2000, but the set up is a bit more drastic.

Brandon Computer Geek Remote desktop server is another way to have your remote offices or remote loan officers connect to you point files. The difference is that the files (applications) will be on your server and cannot be saved to the local hard drive of the remote pc/user. You will keep all of your data! We live in the data age. The person with the data is the one making the money! You can then run reports and generate leads form past loans from every person that logged in to the server. You also get to brand all the email that leaves your point system. By setting up users with an email account to send email from point you are advertising your company name to every customer or lead. We have found that the remote desktop solution works better then Point Data Server for remote connections. The choice is yours and every location should really think about the pros and cons of each before making a decision.
