Who invented email: Ray Tomlinson

by chuck 9/27/2020 12:58:00 AM

See the source image

Photo of Ray Tomlinson

Tomlinson was an American computer programmer who first implemented an email system on the ARPANET system. Tomlinson did this in the 1960's at MIT. Very few networks/ platforms/systems were up and running at that time and they were constant issues, and were not really fast. They used dial up that was drastically slow and everything was CLI (Command Line Interface). So email was basically short text messages back and forth to each other. Much like SMS text messages of today (2021). The big difference between now and today is the way in which you receive your email. In the 1960’s if you were lucky enough, you may have had to power everything up then wait for it all to boot up, then trouble shoot any problems, then get a connection with your dial up provider, which most of the time had some kind of issue, so an hour latter you may be getting your email. Talk about dedication! Think about that for second, an hour just to get a text message?

Windows Server Backup (WBAdmin)

by chuck 7/25/2020 12:39:00 AM

The logs for "Windows Server Backup" are located in the "logs" folder in the Windows directory.

C:\Windows\logs

But how do you view the logs? The logs are can not just be opened and if you search on line you will find that people state that these are not to be viewed. Well that's just poppycock. Open event viewer and right click on event viewer in the tree and select open saved logs. Browse to the directory of the files and and click on them to open them in the saved logs potion of event viewer.

Open Event Viewer
Right click on event viewer in the tree
 Choose to "Open saved Logs"
Browse to the file and click in it.
This should open the windows back up logs in event viewer.

Manatee County to offer new parking meter options at downtown parking garage

by chuck 1/3/2020 9:10:00 AM
Manatee County to offer new parking meter options at downtown parking garage

MANATEE COUNTY, FL (Dec. 31, 2019) –  Drivers who use the County's downtown parking garage at 414 10th Street West will see new parking kiosk meters up until the fourth floor employee parking entrance gate that will allow drivers to use coins or credit cards and soon a mobile app for payment.

Along with the new parking meters comes a new pricing structure: $1 for two-hour parking, or $4 for all-day parking. (Drivers who plan to park for longer periods of time are encouraged to park above the first floor but below the employee parking entrance gate as the rates are reduced).

Parking meters will remain operational Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. A prepay option will allow drivers to submit payment any time after 7:30 a.m. for the meter to begin running at 8 a.m. Drivers will be able to pay via a mobile app (Park Mobile) in February.

Monthly parking permits are available for $40 per month.

The new meters and rates go into effect Monday, Jan. 13. Signs will be posted inside the garage displaying the new rates in the days leading up to that date.

For more information on Manatee County Government, visit www.mymanatee.org or call (941) 748-4501. You can also follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/manatee.county.fl and on Twitter @ManateeGov.

Symantec/Norton antivirus got rid of end point protection

by chuck 11/30/2019 12:22:00 AM
I can't believe Symantec/Norton antivirus got rid of end point protection. "End point protection" is the software that they made for servers and business. Non-the-less this is a sign of things to come. Big changes are coming to the way we currently use computers. All the large companies are buying each other up to offer some type of bundle with their products. I just just wish they would ask AT&T how the direct TV bundle is working for them. Cause it is a hugs mistake. I.T. is not insurance where you bundle your home and auto. but t is to late now cause they are all doing it. Next they will broke up by the US government cause of monopoly rules. The future is exciting to see what happens.

The US government has a IBM Quantum computer, so be aware no encryption in the world is able to keep a Quantum computer out of YOUR data. Computers as we know them have reached "end of life". How does this affect you? Do you use the cloud for a lot of data storage, online banking, and personal data storage? Then this affects you!

What a crap load of bull. Just let me enter my email addres or let me right a short essay on why grilling is my thing. But now I need to help you promote your site. Well here is my post. I hope you guys get a some new customers with this type of markting but be aware the limmings are getting tired of doing your work for you.

Help with starting a online store

by chuck 5/14/2014 4:35:00 AM

In today’s business world it is very easy to get an online store up and running.

There are several ways to approach an online store.

First what is needed?

• A merchant account

• A SSL

• And the store itself

• Hosting

• Domain Name

So how do you get all of these items?

Domain Names
A domain name is the name of your online store. You know like yourstore.com or whatever variation that you decide. Your domain name is directly tied with your hosting – you do not need to have the same company to do your hosting and your domain name, but it makes it a lot easier with less numbers to call.  There are 1000’s of domain registrars available on the web. Instructions for setting up your domain name is provided by the registrar that you choose to purchase the domain name through like Go Daddy, newtech, directnic, and several 1000’s of other domain registrars.  Domains can be redirected to any where you need on the internet by most registrars. This gives you the freedom to move from platform to platform or hosting provider to hosting provider.

Hosting:
To me this is the most important part of setting up a store online.  Time should really be taken to locate a good hosting provider. What should you look for in hosting?  Uptime: because if the site is not up no one can find it. Customer service: Do they have a phone number to call? Or is all tech support handled through email or chat service?  Email/Chat is the current trend in Information Technology  today, and a lot of providers have moved to having just email support or chat support and no phone support. I avoid the email and chat only hosting. It is much easier having someone to talk with and a much faster resolution to problems via a phone call.  Something that takes days in email can take a few minutes via a call. Whether it be video or phone.  For your hosting you will also need to know what type of store program you want to use (see the store section below).  Again a lot of hosting providers have bundles available for creating a store. For beginners a bundle is the best way to go.  Bundles include the store, hosting, SLL, and the domain name or any variation of.

SSL
Secure Socket Layer also known as SSL is a certificate that validates via a third party the authentication of the website you are using. This is the lock you see when you go to a website that has a HTTPS prefix. The S at the end of the HTTP means that it is a secure protocol  between your store and you customer.  This does not mean however that the site is secure, it just means that the protocol that is being used to communicate between your customer and the browser they are using. Site Security is based on a lot more than just SSL such as folder permissions, user access, and a ton of other security things that can create a whole different discussion. There are several different types of ssl and they range in price form $1200.00 to Free.  AS an example Symantec charges I believe around $1200.00 where comdo charges around $300.00. Most hosting providers will also sell you a SLL cert.  There is also OpenSSL which is free and is a open source project (not the safest.) The next cheapest again would be a bundle that includes a shared SSL from your hosting or store provider.  SSL is lots of times included in the monthly price charged by your hosting provider. most of the time this is called a shared SSL. Meaning that several different sites share the SSL.

Merchant Accounts:

A merchant account can be acquired through any of the 1000’s of credit card processing companies. Merchant accounts can be as complicated or as simple as you need. Look at all your options before making a choice on a merchant account. Stuff like do they remove credit processing fee’s before or after they deposit to your business account.  (For me removing the money before made accounting a little of pain because my invoices never matched up with the deposit totals so I like the fee’s to be removed after the money has been deposited.) Really just get to know your merchant account provider and know all your options. i.e. charge back, Merchant fee’s, customer service.

Merchant accounts can also come as a bundle through the hosting company you choose. You can purchase a bundle via a hosting company such as GO DADDY or Thesba.newtek or any of the 1000's of hosting company’s available on the web.  When purchasing a bundle they have a store ready for you to setup as well as a SSL, merchant account and domain name to be purchased.  For beginners this is the best way to go. It’s a one stop service for all your needs and one contact number for support.

Merchant accounts are also available through on line stores like PayPal, Google, Amazon, and eBay and several other online retailers that will let you set up a online store via there services. Some will only allow you to sell what they have available.

Online stores
Again bundles are a great way for a beginner to go.  But if you already have hosting there is possibility you already have a store at your fingertips. Almost all hosting providers provide web app installation services to install either an open source store (developed by an open source community and is normally free) with one click install or the hosting provider may have purchased licensing for a piece of software or developed something in house. Almost all have a installation feature available for easy one click install. You can also set up a store form software that you purchase and move to your hosting. If you choose to purchase software to create and run your store make sure you have the right hosting for it. Knowing what language your store is developed in will help you decide what hosting you need. As an example PHP programing most of the time goes with MySQL databases and Unix/Linux platform hosting. While .net or ASP goes with Microsoft Sql/access Databases and Microsoft Windows hosting. This is not a rule written in stone more like a guideline to help make things run smooth.  All hosting providers will have what type of hosting they offer displayed on their website. A quick example of software that can be purchased and installed on your hosting server is Candy Press.  You purchase this type of software store and run through the set up process on your hosting that was purchased form a hosting provider.  Candypress is around a 100.00 and gives you complete control over your store. Once set up it functions just like the stores that come with bundles or web apps. You can move the software self install stores from hosting provider to hosting provider pretty simple. While bundle stores are usually embeded in to the server of the hosting provider and are a little more difficult to move around.

Affiliate stores are another type of store. This is based on the manufacturer of the product giving you a  store and letting you brand it. There a lot of different types of affiliate stores available. Some will give you the store like Amazon does or a way to integrate products in to your store via xml, edi, iframe or some other type of programing language. Rakuten is the largest right now for affiliate online stores.  You copy and past the code provided by the manufacturer or affiliate program in to the products section of your store and the product will automatically be displayed based on what the code is.  Not all online stores have this capability.

If  you are already a affiliate or reseller check with you vendor to see what they a have available and how there system works this well help you greatly in making a choice of what kind of online store you need. If you need one at all, the affiliate program may offer you a website builder and online store for free.

Hopefully this will help with getting you up and running online if not feel free to give me a call for some more help or some clarity if needed.

The prices are not quotes of any kind and are estimated. We are not affliated with any compney mentioned. All company names are trade marked by owner of said names..

If you get the below error and need more help you can go to the c:\windows\logs select the windows back up folder and there should be some files in text format that  can be opened with notepad and will be able to give you more info on the error. I have found that SEP 12.1 has been a problem with the windows back up. windows back up can not get exclusive rights to a file used by SEP to record info about events, user response and what not. If you upgrade to the latest version the problem goes away. At this time Version RU3 is the latest version. My problem version was RU1MU1

What is MX priority?

by chuck 7/21/2013 5:23:00 AM

What is MX priority?

If your domain has more than one MX record, the mailer has to figure out which one to use. MX records use a field called preference to determine the priority. When you create an MX record, most DNS hosting providers require you to set the preference number. Some label the box preference, and some label it priority. Some require a number, and some ask you to select Low, Medium, or High.

If you only have one MX record, any value is fine for priority or preference. However, if you have more than one MX record; for example, if you use an MX record to verify that you own the domain, as well as an MX record used for mail routing, make sure the MX record for mail routing is higher priority than the one used for validating that you own the domain.

Storage wars problem

by chuck 7/3/2013 3:43:00 AM

Has any one ever gone to one of these? The biggest problem is safety. You must be on site - no credit cards - no check - and cash must be on hand.  Anyone at anytime could pull out a gun,  take everyone’s cash, put everyone in a unit, close and lock the unit, and walk away with a hefty amount of cash. It may take a few hours or a few days before anyone ever noticed that the people were gone and someone finds them.   Before you go to an event like this make sure that you know the area and the business. Do they have security cams in place? Do they get a copy of ID's or do they just let everyone walk in? If you go be safe.

SquareTrade Research:Laptop Reliablity

by chuck 1/14/2012 4:10:00 AM

http://www.squaretrade.com/pages/laptop-reliability-1109/

If there is one thing I try to tell people is that laptops fail all the time. Remember to do a good back up if you have a laptop. Take a moment to read a study from Square trade linked above. "Failure rates for over 30,000 new laptop computers" And "one-third of all laptops will fail within 3 years." "Netbooks are projected to have a 20% higher failure rate from hardware malfunctions than more expensive laptop computers." Take a moment to read the PDF. I was shocked to find that Toshiba had a very low failure rate.

spooler subsystem app stopped working

by chuck 4/20/2011 3:29:00 AM

First option for this error

1. Go to Programs and Features in Control panel > click Turn Windows features on or off

2. click + sign of Print services

3. Select LPD and LPR. You should remove Internet Printing Client. > restart your PC to ensure there is no error of spooler service.

4. Add your printer driver again.

If that does not work
You can edit the registrey

Start -> Run - Regedit -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SYSTEM -> ControlSet001 ->
Control -> Print -> Environments -> Windows NT x86 -> Version -3 -> Remove
All Printers From Here (Delete HP First See If that resolves the problem)

Disabling Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration (IE ESC)

by chuck 2/19/2011 12:47:00 PM

registery settings

To verify the IE ESC configuration at the RD host, you can check the values of these two registry entries:

1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{A509B1A7-37EF-4b3f-8CFC-4F3A74704073}\IsInstalled.
If the value is 1, then Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration is enabled for users. If the value is 0 or the entry is not present, then Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration is disabled for users.

2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{A509B1A8-37EF-4b3f-8CFC-4F3A74704073}\IsInstalled.
If the value is 1, then Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration is enabled for administrators. If the value is 0 or the entry is not present, then Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration is disabled for administrators.
